Study Finds Free Contraceptives Cut Abortion Rate

Free birth control led to greatly lower rates of abortions and births to teenagers, a large study concludes, offering strong evidence for how a bitterly contested Obama administration policy could benefit women’s health.

The two-year project tracked more than 9,000 women in St. Louis, many of them poor or uninsured, who were given their choice of a range of free contraceptives. These women experienced far fewer unintended pregnancies as a result, reported Dr. Jeffrey Peipert of Washington University in St. Louis in a study published Thursday.

There were 6.3 births per 1,000 teenagers in the study, compared with a national rate of 34 births per 1,000 teens in 2010. There also were substantially lower rates of abortion, when compared with women in the metro area and nationally: 4.4 to 7.5 abortions per 1,000 women in the study, compared with 13.4 to 17 abortions per 1,000 women in the St. Louis region, Dr. Peipert calculated. The national rate is almost 20 abortions per 1,000 women.

Women’s health specialists said the study foreshadows the potential impact of the new health care law, in which millions of women are beginning to get contraceptives without a co-payment.

Also I read that free new cars have fewer breakdowns on highways.

Cars breaking down on the highway is not a major social problem. However, we do limit it by forcing people to pay for annual inspections.

Teenagers having babies is a major social problem and has large long-term social costs. If we can avoid that and reduce abortions, that would seem to be a government spending program that would attract support from both the left and right.

Forcing us to have annual inspections is a good thing. It cuts down on accidents. Emissions not so. That my friend is something that is very unfairly imposed.

I agree the poor need to learn when to stop making babies and it might have helped but I think if they want to have premarital sex they should be given the contraceptives and that cost should be deducted from there welfare check. There should also be a penalty for having children out of wedlock. No morals NO check.
People that act like animals should be treated as such.

Lets take it slow and simple. What costs the tax payers more????

1.- Free contraceptives

OR

2. -The state picking up the tab for the birth and medical ins. until the child is 18.
-child credit for welfare.
-dependent deduction for tax purposes for 18 years.
-child tax credit for 16 years.
-twelve years of public schooling. (if he is lucky)
-school lunch program x 12
-the tab for incarceration (if he is unlucky)
-etc, etc.

The GREED of some people because others recieve something for free and you don't is pathetic.

YOU are TRULY the animals in this human race!

And since when is it only that a poor persons child becomes a burden for society???
